2006 CIO Advisory Council

"IT's capacity to innovate"

Planview's 2006 CIO Advisory Council brought together 27 top IT executives from around the globe to discuss the state of the industry. The exclusive event focused on unlocking innovation within IT and featured presentations from industry luminaries such as ExxonMobil, DHL, and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

The Council also facilitated engaging roundtable discussions focusing on some of the industry's hottest issues such as:

  • Increasing IT's Influence in the Strategic Planning Process
  • Gaining Adoption in New Business Processes
  • Marketing the Value of IT

In conjunction with the Council, Planview conducted a survey of IT decision makers. Some of these results can be found below, and the full results are discussed in-dept in the executive report.

Mark Lutchen, Senior Practice Partner for the IT Effectiveness Practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers and author of Managing IT as a Business: A Survival Guide for CEOs, delivered the keynote, "Maximizing IT's Capacity to Innovate: Managing IT as a Business."

"IT has not been able to innovate because of a number of factors, including globalization, fragmentation, and a lack of flexibility. By better managing IT like a business, CIOs can mitigate business risk and drive innovation through business empathy, visibility and transparency into IT spend and performance, and change absorption."

Making Innovation a Reality

Planview's CEO Pat Durbin emphasized that IT must deliver value to the business, becoming an innovation drive for the entire enterprise. His presentation covered many key issues surrounding innovation, specifically:

  • The enemies of innovation, such as organizational risk aversion
  • Defining innovation capacity - the amount of available funds IT can spend on new initiatives in a given year
  • The need for IT to focus on business innovation versus technology innovation

Survey Highlights

  • More than 43 percent of the attendees surveyed this year cited performance measurement as their largest challenge today, second only to aligning IT with the business objectives of their companies.
  • When asked if they could free up 5 percent of their IT budget by eliminating unnecessary spending, 60 percent said they would re-allocate their IT budget to fund more innovative IT projects to be more competitive.
  • 93% of respondents named cultural adoption as the greatest challenge in implementing new processes.
  • The majority of respondents indicated that they want their IT department to be viewed as a business driver.
